Personal Policies

Rehearsals:

  • In place ready to tune at the appointed rehearsal time.
  • Limit social conversation to before rehearsal, break time and after the rehearsal.
  • Learn difficult passages before rehearsal.
  • Notify the principle of your section about any expected absences.

Concerts:

  • In place ready to tune at the appointed time.
  • Dress appropriately.
    • Men- Black, tuxedoes preferred with black tie.
    • Women- All black dresses, skirts, pants and blouses. Long or ¾ sleeves preferred.
    • Both- Black dress shoes
    • Fashion Don’ts:
      • Athletic shoes
      • Tux T-shirts
  • Notify the principle of your section about any expected absences.

Recruiting:

  • Current members are the best source for finding and recruiting new members. Contact Orchestra Director Jack Herriman for current openings at (480) 899-3447.

Sponsorship:

  • All members can be on the lookout for potential new sponsors. The name of the organization and contact person, if known, can be forwarded to any current board member.
  • Suggestions for fund-raising events can also be forwarded to any current board member.

Attendance policy

  • Each regular member is allowed two (2) excused absences or one (1) unexcused absence per concert. Player with absences exceeding these guidelines will be asked to not play for the next concert.
  • Continued excessive absences may result in asking the member to step down until such time as sufficient commitment can be made to the orchestra. The member can ask to be reinstated if an opening is available.

Definition of excused absence:

  • Work related travel:

Generally, work related travel is considered to be excused. The member is responsible for contacting the principle of their section before the trip.

  • Death in the family:

Absences due to a death in the family are considered to be excused absences.

  • Severe illness:

Generally, illness is considered to be excused. The member is responsible for contacting the principle of their section before the rehearsal or event.

  • Other performances

Whereas conflicting performance dates are expected to occur, members whose availability is limited by participation in other performing groups may be asked to step down until such time as sufficient commitment can be made to the San Marcos Symphony.

  • Vacation:

Absences due to vacations are considered to be excused absences.
