Origination of the San Marcos Symphony Name
The name, San Marcos Symphony, has its genesis in the 16th century when Friar Marcos DeNiza, traveled throughout much of the current, southwestern United States, in his quest for the “Seven Cities of Gold”. The San Marcos name was adopted to indicate the rich heritage of the area. Many other southwest sites and cities share the name, including San Marcos Texas and San Marcos California.

Using the ‘San Marcos’ name was never meant to indicate a Chandler-only focus, although many people may think so, since the Sheraton San Marcos Resort is in Chandler. More than this, the San Marcos name and Symphony encompasses the rich history and tradition that is the southwest and, at the same time, embraces the anticipated growth and opportunities expected for the southwest in the future.
